Students interested in pursuing a Surveying career through Penn State University can choose from several different options:

Baccalaureate Degree in Surveying Engineering

Surveying Engineering Vision and Mission Statements, Program objectives and outcomes (pdf file)

The Baccalaureate Degree Program in Surveying Engineering began as a name change in the Surveying Program in the Fall of 2004. It was developed with the help of the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors, and was created in response to the increasing need for specialist in capturing processing and managing geospatial data. The program combines traditional the components of surveying (Adjustment Computations, Geodesy, Photogrammetry, etc.) with the in-depth study of GPS (Global Positioning System) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems).

Associate Degree in Surveying Technology

Vision and Mission Statements, Program objectives and outcomes (pdf file)

The Associate Degree Program in Surveying Technology has a long tradition of excellence. For more than 40 years, this program has been providing technical education to a large number of Surveying professionals. This is an Engineering Technology Program and students should expect to complete it in 2 years. Students from this program can complete the BS degree in Surveying Engineering with an additional 2.5 years of study.

Concurrent Major in Surveying Engineering and Civil Engineering

This program requires ten semesters of study with the first six semesters at Wilkes-Barre and the final four semesters at University Park. Upon completion of the program, a B.S. in Surveying Engineering (SUR E) and a B.S. in Civil Engineering (C E) is awarded by the College of Engineering. To be eligible for this program, a student must initially enroll in the Surveying Engineering program at the Wilkes-Barre campus.

Students must apply by the Entrance-to-Major deadline of their pool semester (Spring semester of the second year).  They will need to go to eLion before the deadline (sometime before mid-February) and confirm C E as their first choice major.  To qualify for the C E major, students must complete the four entrance-to-major courses [MATH 140, MATH 141, CHEM 110 (old CHEM 12), and PHYS 211] with a C or better by the end of their pool semester and have a cumulative GPA that is equal to or higher than the GPA required for admission to C E for the students in their pool.  After being notified of conditional admission to C E pending successful completion of the pool semester, students will need to complete the application for the concurrent majors program. The application is available through the following site:

 http://www.registrar.psu.edu/student_forms/index.html.

If all approvals are given, they will officially be in the concurrent program with the two major, effective the semester following their pool semester.

Concurrent Degree Student Typical Schedule.

2+2.5 Baccalaureate Degree Program

The 2+2½ Baccalaureate Degree Program in Surveying Engineering is available for graduates of our Surveying Technology associate degree who wish to return to Penn State to complete the baccalaureate degree. Completion of the baccalaureate degree through this program takes five semesters. The complete 2+2½ degree tract is also an ideal starting point for returning adults or traditional students who want a 4-year degree but are uncomfortable with their mathematics and rigors of college study skills.

2+3 Baccalaureate Degree for Transfer Students

The 2+3 Baccalaureate Degree Program is also available on a case-by-case basis for students who wish to transfer to Penn State from community colleges or other institutions. In general, the time required to complete the baccalaureate degree in Surveying for a transfer student is four to six semesters, depending on transfer credits. The applicability of transfer credits depends on the accreditation status of the transfer institution, your grades in the courses (C or higher grades are required for transfer), and the equivalency of the courses. The transferability of surveying specific courses is determined by program faculty. All other courses are determined by the admissions office. No discussions on transferability of courses will occur until you have applied to Penn State for a Surveying Engineering or Surveying Technology degree with official transcripts. Please contact Dr. Wes Parks, Chair of Engineering Programs at wwp3@psu.edu (570-675-9213) or our admissions office at 570-675-9229 for more information.

Consider Getting a Minor in Business

Get value added to your Surveying Engineering degree by obtaining a minor in business. Many of our employers suggest that our B.S. students consider getting more courses in business management. The BS program allows students to us up to nine (9) credits in technical electives towards the Business minor. To learn more about this minor follow the link http://www.psu.edu/bulletins/bluebook/major/bsbmin.htm. With additional courses, you can easily obtain this minor and strengthen your position in a company. Develop an academic plan in consultation with your advisor.

A possible list of courses for the minor include:

  1. Required Courses: ACCTG 211(4), ECON 002 GS(3), MGMT 301(3), MKTG 301(3)
  2. STAT 401 substituted for MS&IS 200
  3. SUR 465 and SUR 471

All of these courses can be used in the major.

Internet Certificate Courses

If you would like to see some of our other courses on-line, please complete our form. Course availability will be determined by demand, and program resources.

Courses on the Web.

The Penn State Surveying Engineering program offers two certificate programs in surveying. They are Measurement Analysis and Least Squares and Geodesy and GPS. The course content for each certificate program is

Measurement Analysis and Least Squares Adjustments

  1. SUR 241 - Surveying Measurement Analysis
  2. SUR 341 - Adjustment Computations
  3. SUR 441 - Data Analysis and Project Design

Geodesy and GPS

  1. SUR 351 - Geodetic Models
  2. SUR 441 - Data Analysis and Project Design
  3. SUR 455 - Precise Positioning Systems

To enroll in a course listed below, you must be enrolled as a Penn State student, and register for the classes. The prerequisites for the classes are college level calculus (MATH 140 & 141), statistics (STAT 401), and computer programming (CMPSC 201).
